One of the best parts about summer is fresh in season fruit and of course dessert!

August is the perfect month for late nights, early mornings, beach trips, camping, carnivals and so much more! There is so much to celebrate in the summertime and indulging in some delicious desserts is inevitable. With the heat of summer, August can bring on some serious sweet tooth cravings. With blooming gardens, vegetables and fruits are at their best, peaking with flavor and appearance. Fruit tastes fresh and delicious and is so fun to bake with! Below are just a few of many desserts that are perfect for summer. Enjoy them with friends or eat them solo!

1. Black Forest Cake

Black Forest Cake is a decadent chocolate dessert mimicking the German dessert Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte. Though it may not be the most popular or well known dessert, it is an absolute crowd pleaser. With its light whipped cream and cherry filling, fluffy sponge cake consistency, and juicy tart cherries on top it is a cake that will have you coming back for more. In the month of August, cherries are at their best to pick and eat. It’s fun to find a local farm that allows you to pick your own cherries to take home but if you grow your own cherries, even better! Compared to traditional cakes, Black Forest cake is so unique and special. Some even choose them as their wedding cake for their big day, not only because of the flavor, but because Black Forest cake is so pretty. And if Black Forest cake isn’t your choice of dessert, maybe one of the next four will be.

2. Blueberry Crisp

Did someone say blueberry crisp!? Between the months of June and August is when blueberries are in season and ready for picking. Blueberries are so tasty when baked and vibrant with color as well. Topped with oats and without a crust, blueberry crisp is likely one of the more “healthier” desserts on the menu. Of course, you can’t resist the ice cream to go with it. Blueberry crisp is refreshing, sweet, but tart and pairs deliciously with a scoop (or two) of vanilla bean ice cream.

3. Lemon Bars

Although National Lemon Bar day is in October, lemon bars are a popular dessert to enjoy during the summer. Obviously, lemon bars are likely enjoyed by those who like lemon flavor, but lemon bars are easy to enjoy and can even boost your mood. With vitamin C and phytonutrients present, which are good for detoxifying and inflammation, your body will benefit from having a lemon bar. And after summer has long passed, don’t forget to celebrate National Lemon Bar Day on October 15th!

4. Ice Cream Cake

Nothing beats the heat In August like ice cream! The best ice cream cakes are made fresh. There’s so much you can do with an ice cream cake, starting with the flavors of ice cream. The options are endless and can be catered to those who will be eating the cake. So if you’ve never made an ice cream cake or had one locally made for you, you might want to give it a try! 

5. Peach Crumble

Fresh peaches can really only be enjoyed in the summer. Depending on location, peach season occurs in the spring or summer when the weather is warm. Peaches are delicious alone, but they’re even better when incorporated into desserts. Similar to blueberry crisp, peach crumble is delicious with vanilla ice cream. It can be served warm or cold and truly is the dessert of the summer. Actually, anything with peaches in it is!

Desserts in the summer differ significantly to desserts in winter. Sweets during summer often include fresh berries and other fruits that are in season.
