Did Someone Say Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice?

Oct 16, 2022

It's PSL Season!

It’s that time of the year! Fall has arrived, and with that comes pumpkin spice everything! So if you haven’t had your first pumpkin spice beverage or treat of the year, then what are you waiting for? Pumpkin spice lattes, or should I say PSLs, and pumpkin donuts are the best thing during the fall season. Without pumpkin spice, we may all be lost. So to express our gratitude for pumpkin spice, let’s unpack everything there is to know about pumpkin spice, starting from the very beginning!

The First of Pumpkin Spice

The public was first introduced to Pumpkin Spice in the 1930’s when McCormick launched its pumpkin pie spice. It was marketed to home cooks as an easy alternative to making pumpkin pie. The pumpkin pie spice includes spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, allspice, and cloves. Instead of gathering and measuring all these ingredients separately, McCormick made it possible to just buy one spice to make the perfect pumpkin pie. Who doesn’t love an easy and delicious pumpkin pie?

The Popular Peak

In the 1960’s, McCormick changed the name of their pumpkin pie spice to just pumpkin spice. Soon after the name was changed, people started using the spice for other dishes and the popularity of pumpkin spice continued to grow. Pumpkin dessert recipes surged throughout the nation and from then on pumpkin spice has not stopped trending. In the 1990’s, pumpkin spice began to transform into new products. In fact, the first pumpkin spice candle arrived in stores in 1996. Now, pumpkin is one of the best selling candle scents across the country, alongside vanilla, lavender, and cinnamon.

The Steady Trend

Just when we thought pumpkin spice could not get any more popular, in 2003 Starbucks introduced its famous pumpkin spice latte (PSL). The PSL has taken over the world and has become Starbucks' top selling seasonal beverage. Every year, from September to December, pumpkin spice lattes become a global obsession. But if you’re looking for a truly fresh and overall better pumpkin spice latte, look toward your favorite local coffee shop. Local coffee shops work hard to deliver fresh, bold, and high quality coffee that actually dominates the coffee at Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, and McDonalds.
